Agistri – an island close to the heart

10/2/18

I have a thing for beautiful islands, especially those that are easy to reach. The combination that is Agistri – of a small island, woods that end in magical bays and also close to Athens (only 40 minutes sailing from Piraeus) doesn’t need much to convince me to get on a plane.

Agistri is known mainly to Greek travelers who like to spend weekends away from home. We like the place because it is not crowded with tourists, accessible and authentic. We got to Agistri and got off the ferry in a tiny port in the middle of the island. We settled in the guest house we booked in advance – Rosy Little Village – a unique beachfront resort with an excellent restaurant, cozy and basic rooms and an outdoor space for workshops.

Rosie’s little village – Rosie and Nondes, a husband and wife who met and fell in love in the 1970s in a bar in Romania, are a German and a Greek who, together with the amazing staff, created a charm-full experience and right by the sea.

Their place is surrounded with pine trees, at night you hear the crickets chirp. the rooms are whitewashed, decorated with Bougainvilleas and hibiscus pots. From time to time guests can host events like small weddings. It was interesting to meet the couple and hear the love story and the history of the place.

What did we do in Agistri?

We rented a scooter in SKALA, the small central city, 10 minutes from Rosi’s village. We drove along the beach and got to two beaches that are a must – the first is the Dragonera Beach – a breathtaking nature reserve, with no hotels or houses around, and accommodation is only allowed in the organized camping site. The beach is in a forest and is considered the beach with the clearest water in Agistri.

We walked to the beach taking an easy access road and found a canteen with beers and sandwiches on the way. The beach was peaceful and not crowded. From there we continued on a short drive to Aponisos beach.

In Aponisos we stopped for a half-day of some good ol’ beach time – a swim, a good book and sunbathing in one of the most beautiful places there is. Aponisos is a small inlet connected to the land by bridge and has kiosk services and shaded areas, with sun loungers. On the beach there is also a fish restaurant, where we ate a great fresh lunch.

What else did we do?

We flew for one day to Aegina – the neighboring island and to a single-day trip to the nearby island of Hydra – read here.

We spent some time in Skala, the main town that has everything – a nice beach, restaurants, car and motorcycle rentals, small hotels with cafes.

In conclusion, Agistri is very cute and easy to fall in love with, it is not pretentious, simple but comfortable, with great places to travel and of course wonderful beaches. Its proximity to the mainland is a great advantage.
