End of Summer in Lindos

18/9/17

At the end of the summer we spontaneously decided to fly to Rhodes, specifically to Lindos, the most enchanting town on the island, which I remembered from a brief visit many years before. A return to Lindos, this time for a longer period, was on my list for quite some time. The opportunity presented itself at the end of last summer, when the flight prices dropped and allowed us to go on a low-fare adventure in beautiful Rhodes.

The beautiful village of Lindos is one of the most attractive villages of Rhodes and an idyllic holiday destination, full of whitewashed houses with cobbled courtyards and narrow alleyways. In Lindos you can find hotels of all categories, as well as restaurants, cafes and bars.

Above the town is the Acropolis, visible from anywhere, and can be reached on foot or riding on donkeys. Lindos is about an hour’s drive from Rhodes or the airport, the trip is very pleasant and with a worthwhile stop on the way to see the beautiful bay of Anthony Quinn.

Most visitors make their trip to Lindos a half-day short tour of the town and the Acropolis. I think it’s a quite a miss to spend such a short time in such a lovely place! In my opinion, Lindos is the main reason to go to Rhodes, so we chose to stay in Lindos itself, on the quieter southern side of town.

After a brief research in booking.com I came across exactly what I was looking for – Lindian Police. – a beautiful guest house in an authentic restored house with a view of the sea and the Acropolis. The prices at the end of the season were comfortable and allow us to indulge ourselves in rooms that are too expensive during the high season.

The hotel is a completely new apartment complex, which opened only last summer after the building was renovated, but still preserving its authentic charm. The building is divided into five guest rooms and a shared balcony. Some of the authentic and original elements have been preserved in the renovation, such as the pebble floor, the doors and the windows and the railings, and yet all the modern and comfortable amenities are available – from a luxurious shower, alarm system, kitchen appliances, washing machine and dryer, air conditioning and espresso machine. The place is well tended and well cared for and the hosts take care of every little detail. We were offered a lift from the airport for free, and they left fruit, wine, juice and bread in the room for us, and offered late check-out at no additional cost.

In the autumn, Lindos becomes less filled with tourists and we enjoyed the benefits of the place in a quieter atmosphere and with perfect weather, since Lindos is the warmest area in Rhodes and the temperatures can be very high in summer.

It is important to note that the hotel is not suitable for those who have difficulty climbing. The entrance of vehicles into the village is forbidden and the main car parking is at the entrance to the village.

What did we do at Lindos?

We spent some time in the stunning St. Paul Bay, which is almost completely protected from winds, which makes bathing in its calm, shallow waters a perfect experience, very good to snorkel and swim. The beach has seating areas with beach chairs and parasols on the rocky slopes. Around 10:00 am each day the lovely taverna on the beach – St Paul Bay Strand – opens and serves wonderful meals. On the menu: beer, excellent parfait (local coffee), Greek salad, tuna salad, fresh fish, calamari, pita and Greek dips such as tzatziki, fava and more. Eating and drinking all day long will be surprisingly light on your pockets but will fill your hearts with joy.

We walked through the narrow alleys, went to catch the Acropolis view, sat in taverns and cafes with views of the bay, visited small shops and designer shops. Look for KORI, a collection of exotic collections of home accessories, jewelry, and bags made by young designers from around Greece.
