In Front of the Lighthouse in Chania

09/2/18

We celebrated our mother’s spring-time birthday in Crete – a mother with her three daughters. My mother is woman who loves design and  good taste, so we chose to stay in a charming boutique hotel in the harbor of the old town of Chania in Crete.

MAMA NENA is a small, family-run boutique hotel in the old town of Chania and is open all year round. It is located right on the harbor with direct sea view and a lighthouse at the end of the jetty, accessed from a narrow cobbled alley near the excellent TAMAM taverna.

In April we were the only guests in the hotel and therefore the three-story house was at our disposal. The rooms in the beautiful hotel are decorated in a classic modern style. Each room is individually decorated in calm tones and furnished with quality classic furniture. The guy who greeted us said that the building belonged to his family and the hotel was named after his mother – Mama Nena. The entire building has been fully restored with special emphasis on quality and authenticity, and has been published in several design magazines.

Chania old port

Chania is an ancient city with deep history – Minoan, Byzantine, Roman, Ottoman – all of which are evident in its alleys, its architecture, its special eclectic atmosphere. In the past there was a small Jewish community until the Second World War, and in 2000 the ancient “Tree of Life” synagogue was restored and can be visited today.

We enjoyed the small and inviting shops of the city. During the summer months the place is full of tourists from all over the world, so in April you can enjoy all Chania has to offer without it being overcrowded. The next day we rented a car and went for a trip on the mountain road to the south of the island. We stopped at a winery for wine tasting, ate in a taverna in the village on the mountain and headed toward Loutro – a fishing village in the south-western part of Crete.

Loutro

In the meandering road to Loutaro we slowly discovered a view of a spectacular turquoise sea next to arid mountains, a sight reminiscent of Sinai. Loutro is a charming little village with a number of small hotels, taverns and a spectacular beach with clear turquoise waters – a special destination to visit. At the end of the trip, we sailed for a day on a ferry from Heraklion, the capital of Crete to Santorini, which you can read about here.
