As part of the birthday trip I wrote about before in this post, we set off for an hour and 45 minutes sail from Heraklion, the capital city of Crete, to the port city of THIRA in Santorini, a Cycladic island set on a volcanic mountain. Reservations for daily ferry rides can be made here. We bought sailing tickets at the port in Heraklion.

The voyage in the sea went by fairly quickly. When we arrived at the port, nothing prepared me for the sight I saw – out of the sea, huge cliffs emerged and at the top of them stood a city that seemed to be floating in the sky. The intense sight that is revealed to the eyes is astonishing. We stood on the deck of the ship, which was slowly advancing into the harbor with mouths open from excitement!

Santorini is considered one of the world’s wonders and one of the most visited islands in Greece. You can find cheap and simple rental rooms alongside luxury hotels for the world’s richest.

We took a taxi to the city of Thira on the top of the mountain, wandered the streets, looked at the designer boutique hotels. Everything is whitewashed and clean. The city is charming and well maintained, the unique pavement of the streets, the roofs of the houses, the small shops, the cafes.

From high above you can see the giant ships far away in the sea like little game ships. The setting is very dramatic, as if it were specially drawn for a postcard.

If you celebrate a birthday then it is definitely the perfect spot. It does not take much to sit around looking around, drinking good wine, laughing and enjoying your favorite. It is recommended to come with a good camera.
