Summer Vacation in Sifnos

18/9/17

I first heard about Sifnos from a close friend who was invited to a wedding on the island, and insisted I just had to go. I tend to listen to recommendations by friends, especially those who know me well, so I did not hesitate for a moment and started exploring Sifno online.

The first thing I learned was that a visit to Sifnos requires a minimum of ten days. Sifnos belongs to the group of Cycladic islands and there is no direct way to reach Sifnos from Israel, it takes a three-hour ferry ride from Piraeus. Sifnos can also be reached in other ways, such as flights to Mykonos or Milos and from there to the island.

I invited friends, booked flights, cruises and rooms in a family hotel called Aphrosini located right on the beach called Platialus. And last August we set out ..

Sailing from Piraeus to Sifnos turn out to be a somewhat difficult experience. The ship was a few hours late and the wait was long and tiring. During the voyage itself the sea was stormy and most of us suffered from nausea and vomiting, but when we arrived at the port of Sifnos, called kamares, everything was forgotten. The view was so magical and the weather was so pleasant that at one moment the arduous journey felt worth it. The arrival from Kamars to the bay where we stayed took about 20 minutes by bus.

The hotel reception was warm. Afrosini is a family hotel built in the 1980s and managed by the owners, with the help of the older children who come every summer to help. Maria, their student daughter, helped with recommendations and reservations for trips and restaurants. She kept up to date with everything that was important to know about the island, such as bus arrival times, special events and festivals, recommendations on good restaurants, yoga and pottery classes.

EFROSINI HOTEL SIFNOS

The Rooms at the hotel are simple, clean and cozy. Each room has a small balcony overlooking the sea. The beach has umbrellas and beach chairs, a shaded area for breakfast and snacks during the day and the most importantly – a wide sandy beach and a sea with fifty shades of blue.

If you stay at the beach you will enjoy pleasant winds throughout the day and especially in the evening, so it is nice to be there in the summer. The rooms are very clean and maintained. There is a shady area with chairs and tables where you can rest, eat light meals, enjoy some ice cream, drink coffee or soft drinks.

So what did we do in Sifnos?

Vathi Bay

Vathi bay is a magical and special beach in Sifnos. It can be reached by bus passing through the island or rent a car. The bay is quiet and not overpriced. It has limited and dining options, and this is also the secret of its charm – it is an authentic fishing village that has been upgraded but the original Greek charm remains. We ate at an excellent Taverna on the beach and spent a day bathing. There is a magnificent resort for those who love luxury 5 star hotels, we preferred the simpler experience. So simple, all that the heart needs to release and open.

Pottery Galeries

Platis Gialos was once a beach where potters lived and worked. In the seventies the potter’s homes became small hotels for tourists and to this day you can find little pottery shops and galleries right on the shoreline where you can buy colored clay works in the local style.

On the eastern side of the Platis Gialos bay, beyond a small hill lies a tiny, rocky bay with a Greek restaurant in place. We arrived in the morning and settled on the deck built right on the water. We swam in the cool sea, dived in small crevices and saw beautiful fish. There are sun beds and umbrellas and it is highly recommended to spend a few hours there. Access to the place involves a long climb and steep steps.

Apollonia

The main town of Sifnos is called Apollonia and is situated in the center of the island, built on a mountain.

You get there by car or motorcycle (if you do not book a car in advance, it’s very hard to get there in the summer), but the easiest option is to take the bus that leaves every hour from Platis Gialos to Apollonia and back.

In Apollonia you can find small shops, a pharmacy, a supermarket, restaurants and the local pastry – Lukmodas, a kind of fried donut donuts with extra sugar or honey – so tasty. We traveled several times to Apollonia and each time we discovered, through wandering the picturesque alleys, other nice corners of cafes and charming fashion shops.

Recommendations in Sifnos

Get a massage in VERINA. boutique rooms. The treatments are given in a straw hut close to nature, where you can feel the pleasant breeze that passes between the reeds.

Maiolica

Maiolica is a Mediterranean restaurant with a chef from Israel, owners from Italy and his Greek wife. The restaurant is located on the shoreline of Palatialos. The restaurant is especially popular with tourists and is full every night. It is recommended to book in advance. We ate there several times and it was wonderful each time. And of course we received a warm welcome from the chef along with their local version of hummus.

In conclusion, a vacation in Sifnos is recommended for families and friends. After a day or two, the children find occupations beyond playing on their mobile phone. We bought a butterfly net in the supermarket and they spent hours trying to catch fish, playing beach and water games, backgammon and enjoying a pleasant conversation.

We nicknamed the island: “The Island without McDonalds” – simple and good food is something that the children also enjoyed, and no special attractions were needed to make them and us happy. You should bring a snorkel, fins and an inflatable sea mat, and that’s enough. In summary, Sifnos is restless but not too quiet, suitable for family vacation, for a week or more. For lovers of good food it is considered an island with a high quality culinary, perfects and for those looking for peace and tranquility even during the high season.
